It was another weekend that we knew we need to entertain ourselves within Nairobi county. We found this very decent looking little hotel called Karen Gables and we booked the last three rooms that were available. The hotel has only seven rooms anyway.
I honestly did not go there with big expectations. The pictures did not tell that much to expect. The advantage of this place was that it was a fair deal, and it was a 30-minute drive from home.
Arriving at Karen Gables… The entrance does not tell the full story. There is a small car park, and the house looks lovely. Once you enter the living room area, you understand that this place is incredibly nice and welcoming. First and utmost important, the staff is amazing and well-trained, this is something you rarely find in Kenya. So, hot towels and fresh juice upon arrival, the receptionist briefed us about Karen Gables and gave us a small tour and let us choose our bedrooms. All the rooms are en suite and nicely decorated. On the ground floor, there are 4 parts, first is the big dining area. If you go as a group of 14 you could still fit at this table for a nice dinner. Second, the living room area, with comfortable sofas; third is the other seating area within the same livingroom and fourth is the little whiskey corner where you can enjoy a glass of your choice within their bar. Right outside this living room/dining area, there is the patio again with a dining table for four and a seating area. There are chimneys in the big dining area, in the living room, and at the patio, which gives you a cozy feeling. Just after the patio, there is a nice pool, sunbeds, a little pool bar another dining area by the pool, and a HUGE garden that is lying under your feet when you look ahead from the pool. The house is built on a hill, and the garden stretches like a downhill road in front of the house. A dreamy place overall.
Other than the decoration, the service really amazed me. We stayed on a full board package, and it was 17,000 KES for two. In terms of the meal plan, you are served a three-course meal and you can choose between fish, pork, and meat. As starters, salad, and soup and for sides plenty of options such as rice, fries, mashed potatoes. Everything was delicious, especially the fish.
Even though the hotel was fully booked, it does not feel like you are sharing your time with strangers. The other 4 rooms were a group of friends as well and we did not really bother each other. The pool is wide enough for that many people and dining areas are located strategically that the place is really comfortable for couples and small groups.
The owner of this house is a Dutch ex-pat, who lives in Kenya for a long time. This house was recently built as a hotel and for a few years, it is hosting the guests with great hospitality and attention.
A great place to rest and relax. Click here to visit their page to see more.
