Les Jardins de Chamarel Lodge, Mauritius
Mauritius is a tiny island. However, when you live in the North and have driven down to the South, it’s better to enjoy a night still. We started the new month with a lodge experience.
Félix found Les Jardins de Chamarel Lodge via booking.com. The lodge has a 9.8 rating – this is outstanding. The price was fair as well, so we booked a night to stay here. Once we met Andrew and Pris – the owners of the lodge, we understood why they have this ranking.
It was our first time driving to the South. We made many stops on the way and reached there around 5 pm. The check-in time is 2 pm, and once we were at the hotel, I deep down regretted going there late.
Finding the hotel location can be a little challenging. Fortunately, we called in advance, and Andrew explained how to get there. Google maps do not always work well on the island; it makes you get lost even. So with Andrew’s guidance, we found our way just fine.
Les Jardins de Chamarel Lodge is in the middle of the greens of Chamarel. The reception area is the dining area as well. It has a terrace with small tables and a spacious indoor seating area with a big dining table, comfy leather sofas, and a chimney. It has four tastefully decorated huts. The huts feature a comfortable terrace with a chimney, a comfortable king size mattress with good quality bamboo bed sheets. I assume we all pay attention to the comfort level of the bed, which is one of the most significant things in a hotel room. The bathroom has a walk-in shower. Some will say that there could be a bathtub instead, but let’s not be mean by trying to find errors. The huts have high ceilings, good lighting, and original woodwork.
Some small details from the lodge
Andrew generously offered us to drive to a sunset spot. He took us to a slope where the paragliders take off.
For dinner, there were fish, chicken, and pork options. I chose the fish, Felix chose the pork. However, they served us more than what we ordered because they wanted to make us try different meals from their kitchen as well. I believe that this was a first-timers welcome! All the meals were local cuisine and cooked fresh by Pris. When we booked the room, Andrew told me that we could bring our drinks if we want to. I asked him whether they serve alcohol or not. He said, “Sure we sell, but you can still bring your own.” That was a little surprising for me. I understood when we were there. They are not very rich in wine selection. If you are picky with wine, you should bring your bottle. But otherwise, they have beers and some other spirits. I had two glasses of wine, and their perception of a glass of wine is almost double the size of a regular glass of wine. After dinner, we continued the evening in the living room by the chimney. This place has a great vibe.
Breakfast was English, with scrambled eggs, beans and bacon. There is sure tea, coffee, juice, some yogurt, and fruits. They also had croissants and bread. If you eat everything at breakfast, you might skip lunch.
We paid for this 1-night stay including breakfast 4,500 RP (95 Euro).
Dinner was reasonably priced as well as beverages.
Overall, Les Jardins de Chamarel Lodge exceeded all my expectations. I would love to go back for a long-stay and discover the region more.
